Breast Reduction

BACK TO ALL POST-TREATMENTS

Breast reduction surgery offers an effective solution for women who suffer from discomfort, physical or emotional distress due to large breasts – from back and neck pain, to difficulty exercising or feeling unconfident and uncomfortable in their clothing. Beginning with an extensive consultation with our expert Plastic Surgeon, you will be able to discuss your goals in order to identify the volume and shape for your breast reduction that will complement your body frame. The procedure involves the reduction in weight and volume of the breasts by removing excess skin, glandular tissue and fat to achieve a more proportional breast size, through small incisions around and under the nipple. 6 week recovery period.

PRE-TREATMENT

Pre Treatment Advice

We advise our patients to follow a healthy diet and exercise regime prior to surgery to aid recovery and healing. Do not smoke for 2 weeks prior to surgery and reduce your alcohol and caffeine intake. Your practitioner will discuss any medication you are currently taking and will advise on any adjustments if necessary prior to surgery. Thoroughly wash the chest area with anti-septic the night before and day of the operation.

Before Surgery

Before the procedure, the patient is typically given anesthesia to ensure their comfort during the surgery. This may include local anesthesia, where only the targeted area is numbed, or general anesthesia, where the patient is asleep during the procedure.

The night before

You may need to take time off work and make arrangements for post-operative care. It’s important to plan ahead and make necessary arrangements to ensure a smooth recovery.

POST-TREATMENT

On the day

You will be provided with full post-operative care instructions. You will possibly have surgical drains fitted at the time of surgery to prevent infection, which will be safely removed at a later date. You will also be provided with a surgical bra that should be worn 24/7 for 6 weeks. We recommend sleeping elevated for the first 2 weeks as you will be swollen and may experience some discomfort. Abstain from work and driving for 2 weeks and refrain from exercise for 6 weeks post-op. We recommend use of a Hyperbaric Chamber 3x per week for 3 weeks to aid recovery and healing.

Recovery time

4-6 weeks

After care

Be sure to attend all scheduled follow-up appointments with your surgeon to monitor your progress and address any concerns or questions you may have.
