Botulinum toxin is a neurotoxic protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. It is commonly used for cosmetic purposes to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, as well as for various medical conditions such as muscle spasms, excessive sweating, and migraines. Excessive sweating can be due to a variety of reasons and the most common is the genetic predisposition. Other causes can be secondary to thyroid problems or diabetes, in which cases the underlying cause will need to be addressed before treatment.

Botulinum toxin is a preparation of protein and when small doses are injected into the skin it blocks the signals from the nervous system that supply the sweat glands. This stops them working so hard and prevents them from producing excess sweat. Sometimes a test to identify the exact anatomic location of the glands will be required prior to the treatment.
